Tips to Become More Coachable

Updated: Sep 26, 2023

Talent, skill, and dedication undoubtedly contribute to being a good soccer player, but it's being coachable that elevates a player to greatness. Here are some tips on becoming more coachable:

Embrace the Opportunity to Learn: Openness to learning is a small yet essential quality that instantly enhances your coachability. When you step out of your comfort zone and embrace new ideas, you become a sponge for your coach's wisdom. Remember that no player knows everything, and the more open you are to learning, the greater your soccer skills will flourish.

Embrace Constructive Criticism: Receiving critiques can be challenging, but it's a vital aspect of your development as a soccer player. Understand that critiques are not personal attacks; they are designed to help you improve. View constructive criticism as a roadmap to specific areas where you can grow and evolve your game.

Engage in Communication: Effective communication with your coach is paramount to your success on the field. Don't hesitate to seek clarification when you don't understand something. Additionally, be vocal about your strengths and weaknesses so your coach can tailor training to your needs. Your coach may also identify areas for improvement that you might have overlooked, sparking valuable discussions.

Strive for Continuous Growth: Regardless of the time you've dedicated to the game, there's always room for improvement. Simply going through the motions during drills and practice signals to your coach that you're not ready for more significant challenges. On the contrary, your eagerness to develop as a player makes your coach's job easier because they know you're willing to put in the effort.

Maintain a Positive Mindset: Soccer can have its challenging days, and there may be times when you question your dedication or your coach's instructions. However, your attitude has a profound impact on your performance. Keeping a positive mindset is crucial in determining how coachable you are. A positive outlook will help you stay receptive to feedback and open to growth.

Every player in the PCHS Girls Soccer program has the potential to be coachable, paving the way for greatness on the field. Put these tailored tips into practice during your next training session and witness the significant improvements in your soccer game!
